Meditation
Why should we do meditation?
Meditation can enhance your life; it benefits your mind and body while also having a powerful effect on your health.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School discovered that, in long-term practitioners of relaxation methods such as yoga and meditation, far more ''disease-fighting genes'' were active, compared to those who practiced no form of relaxation (Food Matters).тАЭ
There are many different types of meditation to choose from. Below is a description of four of the most popular techniques.
Mindfulness Meditation: Focus on an object such as your breathing, thoughts, or sounds. This type of meditation focuses on concentration and awareness.
Guided Meditation: Use a recorded tape or in-person guidance. Eventually the need for the guidance will disappear. The teacher uses guided imagery to help put your mind at peace.
Concentrative Meditation: Focus on a single object, such as an image, your breathing or a candles flame. When your mind steers off of the object, train your mind to re-focus.
Open Awareness: Opening your mind to what is going on around you without specifically focusing on one particular thing.
Now that we understand some of the many types of meditation, we can look further into the reasons why you should meditate.
Increase your self-awareness- It is difficult to develop self-awareness because of the busy world we live in. The constant commotion of life tends to get in the way of building self-connection. Self-awareness is the process of connecting with your true self. Meditation helps us focus in the moment, without lifeтАЩs distractions. It helps us tap into our subconscious minds, leaving us still and calm.
Rejuvenates you- Meditation helps rejuvenate you; it helps you relieve any negativity that may be weighing on you. Practice self-healing meditation.
Helps with insomnia- It is proven that mindfulness meditation helps improve sleep. During the process of mindfulness meditation we focus on our breathing and we stop thinking about the past and future, only focusing on the present. Once you have let go and fully relaxed, you are in a better state for a good night sleep.
Better health- Meditate for better health! It has been proven that meditation helps benefit the immune system. It also helps lower cholesterol, reduces blood pressure and can protect you against heart disease.
Reduces anxiety- According to Psychology Today, тАЬAnxiety is a cognitive state connected to an inability to regulate your emotional responses to perceived threats. Mindfulness meditation strengthens a personтАЩs cognitive ability to regulate emotions.тАЭ So, next time you start encountering overwhelming feelings of anxiety, just meditate!
Reduces stress- One of the main uses of meditation is for stress reduction. According to the Mayo Clinic, тАЬDuring meditation, you focus your attention and eliminate the stream of jumbled thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. This process may result in enhanced physical and emotional well-being.тАЭ
